Hexagram 1: The Creative
䷀ 乾 (Qián) · Pure creative force. Act with initiative and persistence.
initiative, strength, persistence, creative power
Lower trigram: Heaven ☰ · Upper trigram: Heaven ☰
The judgment
Strength that keeps moving brings things into being. Energy is plentiful now, and a clear aim can carry you far, as long as it stays true to what is right. Begin, keep going, and let steadiness rather than force be what sustains you.
The image
Heaven above heaven: the sky turns without pause, day after day. Take it as your model: keep building your own strength, steadily and without letting up, rather than waiting for something outside to push you.
The six lines
Read only the lines that changed in your casting, counting from the bottom.
- Line 1 (bottom): The dragon is still under the water. Your strength is real but not ready to show; keep preparing rather than acting now.
- Line 2: The dragon appears in the open field. Your abilities are starting to be seen; seek out people of experience who can help you grow.
- Line 3: Busy all day and still watchful in the evening. Effort brings you close to risk, but staying alert and honest keeps you from mistakes.
- Line 4: A leap that might rise or might fall back into the depths. You are free to go forward or to stay; choose from your own truth and there is no fault.
- Line 5: The dragon flies in the open sky. Your influence is at its best; use it generously and keep wise counsel near.
- Line 6 (top): The dragon that climbs too high. Pushing past the natural limit leads to regret; know when enough is enough.
