Hexagram 4: Youthful Folly
䷃ 蒙 (Méng) · Inexperience. Stay humble and seek a teacher.
learning, inexperience, humility, guidance
Lower trigram: Water ☵ · Upper trigram: Mountain ☶
The judgment
Not knowing is where all learning starts. Things go well when the student seeks out the teacher, not the other way round, and when a question is asked sincerely. Asking the same question again and again out of impatience only muddies the answer. Stay open, be patient, and keep at it.
The image
Water springs out at the base of a mountain, fresh and not yet sure where it will flow. Be thorough in what you do, and let your character grow the way a spring fills each hollow before it moves on.
The six lines
Read only the lines that changed in your casting, counting from the bottom.
- Line 1 (bottom): A little discipline at the start helps a learner focus. Use structure to free them, not to punish; too much strictness backfires.
- Line 2: Be patient and kind with those who don't yet know. Bearing with others' mistakes generously shows you are ready for responsibility.
- Line 3: Don't lose yourself chasing someone who seems impressive. Giving up your own ground to please another leads nowhere good.
- Line 4: Caught up in daydreams that don't touch reality. Clinging to fantasy brings embarrassment; come back to what is real.
- Line 5: Approach the matter like a child: open, curious and willing to be taught. This simple humility brings good fortune.
- Line 6 (top): When correcting a mistake, aim only to stop the harm. Firmness helps; anger and punishment for their own sake do not.
