Hexagram 6: Conflict
䷅ 訟 (Sòng) · Conflict. Seek compromise before the dispute grows.
dispute, compromise, caution, fairness
Lower trigram: Water ☵ · Upper trigram: Heaven ☰
The judgment
You feel you are in the right, yet you are blocked. Staying wary and stopping halfway, open to a fair settlement, brings good results; pushing the dispute to the bitter end does not. Look for a fair-minded person who can see the matter clearly, and don't launch any big undertaking while the conflict lasts.
The image
The sky pulls upward while water runs downward, each moving away from the other. Before you begin anything, think carefully about how it starts, so that conflict doesn't grow from the very first step.
The six lines
Read only the lines that changed in your casting, counting from the bottom.
- Line 1 (bottom): Let the quarrel drop while it is still small. A few words may be said, but things end well.
- Line 2: You can't win this fight against a stronger side. Stepping back and going home protects you and the people around you.
- Line 3: Rely on what you have honestly earned instead of grasping for more. Quietly keeping to it brings things right in the end, though not without strain.
- Line 4: You could fight, but you choose not to. Turning back and changing your stance brings a peace that lasts.
- Line 5: Bring the matter before someone wise and fair. An honest judgment settles it, and that brings great good fortune.
- Line 6 (top): A prize won by fighting to the end is soon taken away again. Victory through conflict does not stay with you.
