Hexagram 16: Enthusiasm

䷏ 豫 (Yù) · Enthusiasm. Inspire others and prepare in good time.

enthusiasm, inspiration, readiness, momentum

Lower trigram: Earth ☷ · Upper trigram: Thunder ☳

The judgment

Enthusiasm moves people. When the one in front is in tune with the mood of the moment, others follow willingly, and it becomes possible to set helpers in place and get things moving. Prepare in good time, and let the energy run along natural lines rather than forcing it.

The image

Thunder bursts out of the earth and the land comes alive. Music and shared celebration bring people together and connect them with what matters most.

The six lines

Read only the lines that changed in your casting, counting from the bottom.

• Line 1 (bottom): Boasting out loud about your excitement or your connections. Showing it off this way brings misfortune.
• Line 2: Steady as stone, you aren't carried away by the mood around you. Seeing early when to step back, you don't need a whole day to decide, and that brings good fortune.
• Line 3: Waiting for someone above to give you enthusiasm, or hesitating too long. Either way leads to regret; find your own pace.
• Line 4: You are the source of the enthusiasm, and great things come of it. Trust yourself, and others gather around you like hair held by a single pin.
• Line 5: A constant pressure that never quite lets up keeps you from being swept away by pleasure. It is wearing, but it also keeps you alert.
• Line 6 (top): Carried away by enthusiasm that no longer fits. Even after the fact, a change of heart frees you from blame.
