Hexagram 23: Splitting Apart
䷖ 剝 (Bō) · Splitting apart. Let the old fall away and stay still.
decline, letting go, patience, endings
Lower trigram: Earth ☷ · Upper trigram: Mountain ☶
The judgment
Things are coming apart, slowly, from underneath. This is not the moment to push forward or start something new. Accept the season, keep quiet, and protect what matters most; it will pass.
The image
The mountain rests on the earth, and only a broad base keeps it standing. Make your footing secure by being generous to the people and the ground that hold you up.
The six lines
Read only the lines that changed in your casting, counting from the bottom.
- Line 1 (bottom): The legs of the bed are being worn away; the trouble starts at the very bottom. Holding stubbornly to your position only hurts you now, so wait.
- Line 2: The frame of the bed splits as well. You are alone and the trouble is close; stay careful and flexible rather than rigid.
- Line 3: You break with those who are undermining what is good, even if it leaves you lonely. Siding with what is right is no mistake.
- Line 4: The damage reaches your own skin. The decline is personal now; accept it rather than fighting blindly, for force will not stop it.
- Line 5: Like a line of fish swimming in order, scattered parts fall into place behind a good leader. The tide turns, and everything works out.
- Line 6 (top): One large fruit is still uneaten, a seed of what comes next. What is good finds new ground to stand on, while those who tore things down lose their own shelter.
