Ansuz Rune Meaning
ᚨ · sound "a" · Freyr's ætt · name means a god, one of the Æsir
communication, insight, inspiration, listening
Upright meaning
Ansuz is breath turned into words: messages, good counsel, a line of a song that keeps coming back to you. It invites you to listen closely, to what others say and to what you already half know, and to speak with care.
Reversed (merkstave)
Reversed, Ansuz can reflect crossed wires, words that miss their mark, or advice you are not quite hearing. It may help to ask the question again more plainly, or to sit quietly for a while before you answer.
Lore
Its name meant one of the Æsir, the gods, and modern readers link it above all with Odin, the god of poetry and hard-won wisdom. All three rune poems cover it but hear the name differently: the Old Icelandic poem as a god, the Old Norwegian as the mouth of a river, and the Anglo-Saxon as the mouth from which all speech begins.
