Hexagram 50: The Cauldron
䷱ 鼎 (Dǐng) · The cauldron. Transform raw material into something nourishing.
transformation, nourishment, culture, refinement
Lower trigram: Wind ☴ · Upper trigram: Fire ☲
The judgment
The cauldron is the vessel where raw ingredients become a meal worth sharing. This is a time to cook things through: to turn talent, effort and what you have been given into something that feeds others. Treat your gifts with care and something lasting comes of it.
The image
Wind below, as wood, feeding Fire above: the flame keeps the cauldron working. Stand steady in your proper place, keep your purpose clear, and let what is in you be slowly transformed.
The six lines
Read only the lines that changed in your casting, counting from the bottom.
- Line 1 (bottom): Tip the cauldron over and empty out the old residue before you cook. Even an unlikely start can lead somewhere good once the vessel is clean.
- Line 2: There is real food in your cauldron. Others may envy it, but they cannot touch what you have truly made, so keep your attention on the work.
- Line 3: The handles have shifted and no one can lift the pot; your best work goes untasted for now. Be patient: like rain after a dry spell, recognition comes and the tension eases.
- Line 4: The cauldron's legs give way and the meal spills. Taking on more than you can carry, or leaning on the wrong helpers, makes a mess, so be honest about your limits.
- Line 5: The cauldron has yellow handles and golden carrying rings: you are approachable, steady and easy to work with. That openness draws capable people to you, so keep to it.
- Line 6 (top): The cauldron has rings of jade, hard yet softly gleaming. Strength and gentleness are in balance, good counsel flows freely, and the way ahead is open.
