Hexagram 51: The Arousing
䷲ 震 (Zhèn) · Shock. Thunder wakes you; stay calm and reflect.
shock, awakening, composure, reflection
Lower trigram: Thunder ☳ · Upper trigram: Thunder ☳
The judgment
A thunderclap: sudden news or an upheaval that shakes everyone around you. Fear comes first, then relief and even laughter once the shock has passed. The one who keeps hold of what matters through the noise comes out stronger. Let the jolt wake you rather than unseat you.
The image
Thunder on Thunder, one roll after another. When the ground shakes, set your life in order and look honestly at yourself, so the next shock finds you steady.
The six lines
Read only the lines that changed in your casting, counting from the bottom.
- Line 1 (bottom): The shock arrives and your heart jumps, then you laugh with relief. Being shaken awake early is a blessing.
- Line 2: The shock brings danger and you may lose things you valued. Get to higher ground and don't chase after what is gone; in time what truly matters finds its way back, or stops mattering.
- Line 3: The shock leaves you dazed. Let it move you to act, and you will come through it.
- Line 4: The shock gets stuck in the mud, and you can neither push back nor move forward. Wait for firmer ground before trying again.
- Line 5: Shocks keep coming, back and forth. Stay centered: nothing essential is lost, and there is still work you can do.
- Line 6 (top): Panic spreads and everyone stares around wildly, so pushing ahead now would go badly. Step back before the turmoil reaches you, even if others talk about your caution.
