Hexagram 52: Keeping Still
䷳ 艮 (Gèn) · Keeping still. Pause mind and body; know when to stop.
stillness, rest, boundaries, meditation
Lower trigram: Mountain ☶ · Upper trigram: Mountain ☶
The judgment
Like a mountain, be still. This is a time to quiet both body and mind, to stop moving when moving would not help. Rest in the moment without reaching past it, and the restless pull of other people's demands loosens its grip. Knowing when to stop is its own kind of wisdom.
The image
Mountain beside Mountain, solid and unmoving. Keep your thoughts within the situation you are actually in, and let them rest there.
The six lines
Read only the lines that changed in your casting, counting from the bottom.
- Line 1 (bottom): Keep your toes still: stop before you even start. Pausing at the very beginning costs nothing and keeps you steady.
- Line 2: Your legs are held still, but you are being carried along by someone else's momentum and cannot stop it. You may feel uneasy; notice that, and don't pretend otherwise.
- Line 3: Stillness forced on your middle becomes rigidity, and holding everything down by sheer will leaves the heart feeling choked. Ease up and breathe.
- Line 4: You quiet your whole torso, your sense of self. It is not complete calm yet, but it is real progress.
- Line 5: Keep your jaw still and choose your words with care. Speaking less, and in good order, leaves nothing to regret.
- Line 6 (top): Stillness has become part of who you are, calm and generous. This settled heart brings good fortune.
